Why teak is the definitive outdoor material
Teak (Tectona grandis) is exceptional among hardwoods for one fundamental reason: it produces its own oils. These natural silicates and oils repel water, inhibit fungal growth, resist insect damage, and prevent the warping and cracking that destroys lesser timbers in tropical conditions. This is why teak has been used in shipbuilding and tropical outdoor construction for centuries — and why it remains the material of choice for serious outdoor furniture.
In Mauritius specifically, the coastal environment accelerates deterioration in most materials. Aluminium corrodes, synthetic resin fades and cracks, untreated softwoods rot within seasons. Properly constructed teak furniture, by contrast, acquires a distinguished silver-grey patina over time while retaining its structural integrity — without any treatment at all. Or it can be maintained with periodic oiling to preserve the warm honey tone. Either way, the furniture lasts.
Teak furniture built correctly in the right climate is not a maintenance problem. It is a decades-long asset.

Designed for villas and private residences
A private villa terrace in Mauritius is typically a serious investment in outdoor living — generous in scale, designed with architectural intention, and expected to look exceptional year-round. The furniture must match that ambition. WOODWORX works with villa owners and their interior designers to select or commission pieces that complement the architecture, work at the scale of the space, and hold their appearance through the seasons.
We supply to properties across Mauritius — from Grand Baie to Bel Ombre, from hillside residences to beachfront villas. The tropical coastal environment is the only environment we design for, which means every decision in material selection, joinery method and finish application is optimised for Mauritius conditions.
Maintenance: the honest picture
New teak starts as a warm amber-gold. If left untreated outdoors, it weathers to a distinguished silver-grey over 6–12 months. Both are accepted and desirable finishes — which you prefer is personal. Either state is stable and does not indicate deterioration.
To maintain the warm honey colour, apply teak oil or a specialist teak sealer annually — a simple process taking an afternoon for a full outdoor setting. To allow natural weathering, do nothing. The furniture requires no painting, no varnishing, no complex treatment schedule.
Structural maintenance is equally simple: tighten any stainless hardware if needed over time, and keep drainage clear under table and chair legs to avoid standing water pooling in joints. Beyond that, the furniture looks after itself.
Frequently asked questions
Will teak furniture last outside in Mauritius's tropical climate?
Yes — teak is specifically suited to tropical coastal climates. Its natural oils resist humidity, rain, UV and salt air. Properly constructed teak outdoor furniture lasts decades in Mauritius with minimal care.
Does the furniture need to be brought inside during cyclone season?
For severe weather events we recommend bringing lighter pieces under shelter or stacking and securing them. Heavier tables are generally stable. Cushions should always be stored inside or in weather-resistant covers.
How do I stop the teak from going grey?
Apply teak oil annually to maintain the warm honey colour. Use a dedicated teak oil or brightener rather than generic wood oil. If the furniture has already greyed, a teak cleaner and brightener will restore the colour before oiling.
Can I order outdoor furniture in custom dimensions?
Yes — all pieces are made to order. We work to any dimension your space requires, whether that is a longer dining table, wider lounger, or a specific seat height for your terrace design.
