Bespoke Teak Furniture, Handcrafted in Mauritius

WOODWORX makes furniture the way it should be made — to your exact specifications, by craftspeople who understand the material. Every table, chair, lounger and outdoor piece is designed around your space and built once, to last decades.

What bespoke actually means

Bespoke furniture is not a marketing term here — it is a literal description of how we work. Nothing leaves our workshop as a catalogue order. Every commission begins with a brief, proceeds through consultation and design, and results in a piece built specifically for its destination and owner.

This means your dimensions, not standard ones. Your finish preference — silver-grey weathered teak, warm honey oiled, or somewhere between. Your design language — the architectural lines of a modernist villa, the warmth of a traditional colonial home, or the restraint of a minimalist resort. WOODWORX produces the furniture that fits your vision, not the other way around.

The commission process

Project brief

You share your project — the space, the function, your aesthetic references, any drawings or images. This can be as structured or as open as your thinking at this stage. We ask the questions that help us understand what you actually need.

Design consultation

We work through dimensions, material options, finishes and structural details. For complex commissions we produce drawings or samples for approval. You see exactly what will be built before production begins.

Handcrafting in Mauritius

Your piece is built in our workshop in Bambous, Mauritius. Teak is selected and prepared, joints are cut and fitted by hand, and every surface is finished to the agreed specification. We do not outsource production.

Delivery

Completed pieces are delivered and, for larger commissions, installed on-site. We coordinate with your project team to align with renovation or construction timelines.

Why bespoke beats imported retail

Mass-produced imported furniture is built to fit a global market, not Mauritius's climate, proportions or aesthetic. The dimensions are standardised. The teak is often lower grade. The finish is applied for photography, not longevity in a tropical coastal environment. And when something goes wrong — a joint fails, a finish deteriorates — there is no workshop to call.

A WOODWORX commission is the opposite of that. The grade of teak is selected for your piece. The construction is designed for how you will actually use it. The finish is chosen for Mauritius's humidity and UV levels. And because we made it here, we can look after it here.

What we can make

Our experience covers the full range of residential and hospitality furniture: dining tables of any length and configuration, outdoor living collections for large terraces, sun loungers and deckchairs for poolside environments, architectural benches and side tables, bar stools and counter-height pieces, and statement console and feature furniture for indoor or sheltered spaces.

We also work on pieces that don't fit standard categories — architectural installations, integrated planter and furniture combinations, and structural elements that blur the line between furniture and architecture.

Customisation options

Every aspect of a commission can be adjusted: overall dimensions, leg profile and height, top thickness, edge treatment, hardware finish (including brass and black metal options), surface finish (oiled, limed, or weathered), and cushion or upholstery where relevant. If you have a specific requirement not listed, ask — our answer is almost always yes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I commission a single piece, or do you only take large orders?

We take single commissions and we take large-scale hospitality orders. There is no minimum. A single dining table for a villa is as welcome as a 50-piece hotel programme.

How do I know what finish to choose?

We guide you through this during the consultation. We can show samples and discuss how different finishes behave over time in your specific environment — indoor, covered outdoor, or fully exposed.

Do you work with dimensions I provide, or do you have standard sizes?

We work entirely to your dimensions. Our collection pages show reference sizes, but every piece is produced to order. If you need a 340cm dining table or a 55cm-high side table, that is what we build.

Can I see the workshop?

Yes — we welcome visits to Bambous for clients who want to see the workshop and discuss their commission in person. Contact us via woodworx.mu to arrange a visit.
