Teak Furniture in Mauritius: The Complete Buyer's Guide (2026)

Teak is the best-performing wood for furniture in Mauritius because its natural oils resist humidity, termites and salt air without chemical treatment. But not all teak is equal. The difference between a piece that lasts 30 years and one that cracks in three comes down to the grade of the wood, how it was dried, and how it was built. This guide explains what to look for — and what to ask any supplier, including us at Woodworx.

Why teak suits the Mauritian climate

Mauritius is hard on furniture. Year-round humidity, strong UV, summer cyclone rains and salt air on the coast all attack wood, metal and fabric.

Teak (Tectona grandis) handles this better than almost any other timber for three reasons:

  • Natural oils and rubber inside the wood repel water, so it swells and shrinks far less than other hardwoods.
  • Silica content makes the wood dense and naturally resistant to termites and wood-boring insects.
  • Stability: properly kiln-dried teak barely moves with humidity, so joints stay tight and tabletops stay flat.

That is why hotels and resorts across the Indian Ocean specify teak for poolside and terrace furniture.

Bali teak: why origin matters

Most quality teak furniture sold in Mauritius comes from Indonesia, where teak has been grown in managed plantations for over a century. Indonesian timber exports are covered by the SVLK legality system, which tracks wood from forest to factory. Woodworx imports its teak collections directly from Bali workshops, where craftsmen build each piece by hand.

Grade A, B, C — what the grades mean

GradeComes fromLookLifespan outdoors
AHeartwood (centre of mature tree)Even golden-honey colour, tight grain, oily feelDecades
BOuter heartwoodLighter, some colour variationGood, needs more care
CSapwood (outer layer)Pale, patchy, dry feelShort — prone to rot and insects

Ask any supplier which grade they sell. A price that seems too good is usually grade B or C sold as "teak".

5 checks before you buy teak furniture

  1. Feel the surface. Grade A teak feels slightly oily and smooth, never dry or chalky.
  2. Check the joints. Look for mortise-and-tenon or dowelled joinery, not just screws and glue.
  3. Look at the hardware. Screws and fittings should be stainless steel or brass — anything else rusts in sea air.
  4. Lift it. Solid teak is heavy. A light "teak" chair is often a veneer or a different wood.
  5. Ask about drying. Kiln-dried timber won't crack after a few months in Mauritian humidity.

The silver patina: let it age or keep it golden?

Left outdoors, teak slowly turns a soft silver-grey within months. This is surface colour only — the wood underneath stays healthy. Many villa owners love the weathered look. To keep the golden tone, clean and apply a teak protector once or twice a year. Indoors, teak keeps its honey colour for years.

Frequently asked questions

Is teak furniture worth the price in Mauritius?

Yes. Grade A teak outlasts cheaper woods several times over in tropical conditions, so the cost per year is often lower.

Can teak furniture stay outside during cyclone season?

Teak itself handles rain well. Before a cyclone, bring cushions and parasols in and secure or store lighter pieces against wind, not water.

Do I need to oil teak furniture?

No. Oiling is cosmetic. Regular washing with mild soap keeps it healthy; a teak protector keeps the golden colour.
