The Best Outdoor Furniture for Mauritius: Built for Sun, Salt and Cyclone Season
By Woodworx · Published
The best outdoor furniture for Mauritius is solid grade A teak with stainless-steel fittings and quick-dry outdoor cushions. It survives strong UV, humidity and salt air for decades, while many cheaper materials fade, rust or crack within a few seasons. Here is how to furnish a terrace, pool deck or balcony that still looks good in ten years.
What Mauritius does to outdoor furniture
- UV: tropical sun bleaches fabrics and makes plastics and synthetic rattan brittle.
- Humidity: constant moisture causes cheap wood to swell, split and grow mould.
- Salt air: on the coast — Grand Baie, Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Belle Mare — salt corrodes ordinary steel and fittings within months.
- Cyclone season (roughly November to April): heavy rain and wind test both the material and the weight of each piece.
Good outdoor furniture here is not a luxury — it is the cheaper option over ten years.

Cushions matter as much as the frame
In humid climates, cushions fail first. Look for quick-dry outdoor foam and solution-dyed acrylic or olefin fabric, which resists fading and mildew. Removable, washable covers save a lot of trouble. Store cushions indoors during heavy rain and before cyclones.
Teak outdoor care in 4 steps
- Wash with mild soapy water and a soft brush 2–3 times a year.
- Rinse well and let it dry in the sun.
- Let it silver naturally — or apply a teak protector to keep the golden colour.
- Never use a pressure washer; it raises the grain.
Coastal tip
Within a few hundred metres of the sea, rinse furniture with fresh water every few weeks to clear salt. Teak itself is unaffected, but fittings and fabrics last longer.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best material for outdoor furniture in Mauritius?
Grade A teak, for its resistance to humidity, insects and salt air. Powder-coated aluminium is a lighter alternative but can heat up in direct sun.
Can I leave teak furniture outside all year?
Yes. Teak can stay outdoors year-round. Store cushions and parasols during heavy rain and cyclones.
Why does my outdoor furniture go mouldy?
Moisture trapped in cheap wood or foam. Teak and quick-dry outdoor foam dry out quickly and resist mould.
Who sells teak sun loungers in Mauritius?
Woodworx sells handmade Bali teak sun loungers, including the Cary sun lounger, with island-wide delivery.
