Custom Furniture in Mauritius: When Made-to-Measure Beats Off-the-Shelf
By Woodworx · Published

Custom furniture is worth it in Mauritius whenever a standard size doesn't fit the room, the piece is built in, or it has to survive heavy use and humidity for decades. Kitchens, wardrobes, vanities and large dining tables are the clearest cases. Mauritian homes often have non-standard wall lengths and ceiling heights, so imported flat-pack rarely fits wall-to-wall. Here's how to decide — and how a professional custom project should run.
Custom or ready-made? A quick test
| Choose custom when… | Choose ready-made when… |
|---|---|
| The piece fills a wall, alcove or exact space | It stands freely in the room |
| You need it built in: wardrobe, kitchen, TV wall, shelving | You need it within days |
| You want a specific wood, finish or size | A stock design already suits you |
| It's a statement piece: dining table, headboard, reception desk | You're furnishing many identical rooms |

What a custom wood atelier can build
- Kitchens: melamine plywood or solid oak cabinetry, with quartz or wood countertops
- Built-in wardrobes and walk-in closets, floor-to-ceiling
- Dining and conference tables in solid oak, Iroko and other hardwoods, any length
- Architectural woodwork: wall cladding, ceilings, pergolas, Balau decking, staircases
- Hospitality fit-outs: bars, reception desks, room furniture for hotels and guesthouses
- Custom outdoor pieces in Iroko or Balau, sized for your terrace
How the Woodworx custom process works
- Brief and site visit — we measure the space and discuss use, style and budget.
- Design and quote — drawings and an itemised quote covering materials, finish, timeline and installation.
- Deposit and production — built in our atelier: cutting, joinery, sanding and finishing.
- Quality checks — dimensions after cutting, alignment after assembly, surface before finishing, final inspection before delivery.
- Delivery and installation — with a signed delivery note so you know exactly what was handed over.

Materials for a humid climate
In Mauritius, the wrong material is the most common reason custom furniture fails. Kitchens and bathrooms need moisture-resistant boards, sealed edges and good hinges — we build cabinets in melamine plywood or solid oak. Outdoor pieces need a naturally durable hardwood such as Iroko or Balau. Finishes matter too: a natural look, or a varnish for stain and moisture protection on tables and counters.
Questions to ask any carpenter
- Will I get an itemised written quote with a timeline?
- What board and wood will you use, and why?
- Who installs, and is installation included?
- What happens if something arrives damaged or doesn't fit?
- Can I see photos of finished projects?

Frequently asked questions
How long does custom furniture take in Mauritius?
It depends on size, materials and finish. Your written quote states the production and installation timeline before any work starts.
Is custom furniture more expensive than imported furniture?
Not always. For built-ins and odd sizes, custom often costs similar and fits far better.
Do you build custom kitchens and wardrobes?
Yes. Woodworx designs, builds and installs custom kitchens, wardrobes and built-in furniture across Mauritius.
Do you need a deposit for custom work?
Yes. A 50% deposit confirms the order and covers materials; the balance is due on completion.
